The time has come, and as I am now retiring, I wanted to take this opportunity to send a special thank you to all my wonderful patients and their families. It has been a distinct privilege, and indeed a pleasure, to assist you with all your dental needs at the Leigh Smile Center in Westlock over the past 25 years. When my wife Anita, a Dental Assistant, born here in Westlock, coaxed me into moving to this area years ago, I didn’t know that it would be one of the best decisions of my life. Anita and I, and our two boys love it here and look forward to many more years ahead on our Ranch near Long Island Lake. Anita and I have really enjoyed watching some of our younger patients grow up and start to bring their own young families to the practice.

I have been placing Dental Implants now for over 38 years, but I have devoted most of my efforts Full-Time over the last fifteen years or so to my Dental Implant Practice. We have been privileged in building one of the top Implant Centers in Canada. Over the past few years, I have enjoyed passing on my knowledge of Dental Implants to other Dentists from all over North America with Dental Implant Courses at our Implant Center in Westlock.

A lot of our patients travelled great distances from areas of Western Canada to have their Implants placed and restored at our Center. Recently I have been very fortunate in finding an excellent, highly trained Dentist, Dr. Tim Barter, to carry on the Leigh Smile Center Implant Practice and to continue to provide that specialized service to our community and the surrounding region. Tim is very experienced in this new and fast-growing field of Dentistry and I have every confidence in his abilities. Tim is also adding a much-needed service for the area.  He is fully accredited to provide IV Sedation (Sleep Dentistry) for Implant Surgery, Wisdom Teeth Removal, teeth extractions and many other services.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the talented, professional, and caring staff members with whom I have had the privilege of working alongside. I think of them as my extended family. They have kept me smiling when times were difficult and laughing at the end of a long day. You have my deepest appreciation. I will miss all of you more than you can imagine.

I can’t believe that I just celebrated my 75 th. Birthday on May 1st, (how the time has flown by) and have practiced Dentistry for almost 50 years. My family and I felt it was a good time for me to retire, slow down, spend more time with them, and enjoy the rest of my life. I will be ‘hanging up my dental drills’ so to speak and picking up my fishing rod.

I consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world. I found something in life that I loved to do, and I have enjoyed every single minute of the past 50 years practicing Dentistry and am especially proud of being a pioneer and practitioner in the newer field of Implant Dentistry.

Dr. ‘Rob’ Leigh

45 Years in the Dental Profession

I am a General Dentist, and have been practicing Dentistry since 1975, after graduating from the University of Western Ontario Dental School, London Ontario. Prior to that, I graduated from the University of Guelph with an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree. Before entering Dental School, I was working on a Master's Degree in Physiology at the University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Robert LeighShortly after graduating from Western, I became increasingly interested in the whole process of Dental Implants, and how they could change the Dental Profession and be a benefit to patients; in particular, for those who had lost teeth, or were edentulous and wearing dentures. I recall, at the time, that dental implant treatments were viewed with skepticism by many in the dental profession. Now, they are recognized as a viable alternative and treatment option worldwide. Hundreds of thousands of dental implants are placed yearly, with excellent success rates,  by thousands of dentists  (General Dentists and Dental Specialists) throughout the world. Major Dental Implant Organizations have been established for Dentists, to educate and inform them about the advancements in, and benefits of, dental implant procedures. These procedures have allowed dentists and patients many more alternatives for their dental needs. I am a long-term, proud member of the two largest Dental Implant Organizations in the World.

Education and Experience in Dental Implant procedures is Very Important

Like all Dentists in Alberta, as a practicing Dentist, and in order to maintain my license, I am required by the Alberta Dental Association and College (ADA&C) to maintain an educational standard through continuing education programs. In an effort to become more proficient in general dental and dental implant procedures, throughout my career I have pursued many aspects of continuing education. Unlike many Dental Associations in other Canadian Provinces, the ADA&C does not permit Alberta Dentists to use websites or advertising to inform patients of their continuing education in associations or organizations related to Dental Implants, or Cosmetic dental treatments, or any bona fide credentials they may have received from those dental associations in pursuit for further education. I believe that it is extremely important for patients to be informed about the qualifications and experience of the dental professional who may be placing or restoring Dental Implants. Please see the "Dental Implants" or "Dental Implant Fees" pages for the 4 Very Important Questions that a Patient should ask his or her Dentist when considering Dental Implant procedures.

My Obligation to my Patients

I consider it an obligation to my patients to keep abreast of the most recent advancements in dentistry, and to fully inform them of my qualifications in Dental Implant procedures. All of the members of my Dental Surgical Team are Registered Dental Assistants (R.D.A.) Level II, and are members of the Association of Dental Implant Auxiliaries and Practice management (an affiliate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists). My referral-based practice is limited to Full-time Implant Placement, Restoration, associated Bone Grafting, related care, and Teaching.

My wife Anita, who was born in Westlock, a Registered Dental Assistant Level II, just recently completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science. Our oldest son Austen just graduated from Highschool, and our youngest, Even, is in grade Eleven. We all live on our ranch just north of Westlock. My daughter, Brandy Lynn, lives and works in Victoria, B.C. And ... we have a new Shepernese breed puppy named Roxy. Anita and I love to travel with our two sons and their older sister. We also love to spend time on our quads, boating, and enjoy the rural lifestyle. Austen loves farming and hunting, and Evan loves computers.
Personally, I look forward to meeting and speaking with new patients who want to take advantage of the benefits afforded by the placing of Dental Implants. Contact the office to arrange for a Consultation or Second Opinion. I think you will find it well worth while.
